Next, ask how long conversations and uploaded content are retained. Some services may keep history to support continuity, while others may offer temporary modes or controls for deleting past interactions. Retention should be explained in clear language, because it affects what feels appropriate to share.

It is also useful to understand whether your data may be used to improve AI systems and whether that use can be controlled. The details vary by provider, but the principle is straightforward: people deserve to know when their conversations contribute to product development.

Everyday Habits That Protect Your Privacy

For personal conversations, avoid sharing passwords, full payment card details, government identification numbers, private access codes, and other information that should not be repeated in a chat. It should also respect context. Asking an assistant to identify a plant through a camera is different from discussing a personal situation over a long series of voice conversations.
